For most of my life, my weight—and worrying about it—has been a constant.
I can look back at pictures of myself as a child and remember already feeling “pudgy.” Somewhere along the way, I think I started to equate food with comfort, maybe even love. I’ve always had a sweet tooth, and if I’m being honest, I probably have a natural tendency to be a little heavier than I’d like.
But as I’ve gotten older, my perspective has started to shift.
It’s not just about how I look anymore—it’s about my health.

Recently, I listened to a Mel Robbins podcast featuring neurologists Dr. Dean and Dr. Ayesha Sherzai. They talked about ways to help prevent Alzheimer’s and dementia, which really hit home for me.

I have friends and family members who are either dealing with dementia or caring for someone who is. It’s something that feels closer and more real than it used to.
One simple thing they shared really stood out:

🚶♀️ The Power of a Daily Walk
As the weather has started to warm up here in Virginia, I’ve been making more of an effort to get outside and walk.
- I try to walk during lunch when I can to clear my head
- Or after work to reduce stress before heading home
And I’ve started noticing something:
- I feel more focused in the afternoons
- I have more energy
- I’m in a better mood
It’s not just about weight—it’s about how I feel.
And now knowing it may also help protect my brain long-term? That’s even more motivation.

💃 Finding Joy in Movement Again
Another small win lately—I found a Zumba class that actually fits into my schedule.
It’s on Monday and Wednesday evenings at a local parks and recreation center, and somehow it works with my long workdays and commute.
I used to go to Zumba regularly and loved it, but since moving about a year and a half ago, I hadn’t found a class that felt convenient enough to stick with.
And here’s the thing—I’m not great at the steps.
But I love it anyway.
The music, the energy, the people—it’s always been welcoming and fun.
I also recently upgraded to more comfortable workout clothes, which honestly helps motivation more than I expected:

I also recently heard that dancing is one of the best things you can do for your brain, because it combines movement with thinking and coordination.
So now I’m looking at it differently:
- It’s not just exercise
- It’s something that’s good for my mind and something I genuinely enjoy
✈️ A Little Extra Motivation… Paris
If I’m being honest, I also have a pretty exciting reason to stay motivated right now:
👉 I’m going to Paris in May.
I went once right after high school with my sister’s French class, and I’ve wanted to go back ever since.
Recently, I realized my passport expires in January 2027—and it has zero stamps in it. That felt like a sign that it was time to change that.
I’ve started traveling more for work and even invested in new luggage (which I’m weirdly excited about):

Soon after, I saw on Facebook that my cousin—who travels to Paris a couple of times a year—will be there in May and mentioned doing a VIP day.

We’ll be meeting in Paris for a couple of days, and I’ll get to experience a morning of shopping and exploring the city with her (which I am very excited about).

✨ Where I Am Right Now
I’m not doing everything perfectly.
I’m not following a strict plan or trying to overhaul my entire life overnight.
But I am:
- Walking more
- Moving my body in ways I enjoy
- Thinking more about my long-term health
- Doing things that make me feel good
💭 Final Thoughts
For a long time, my focus was mostly on weight.
Now, it’s starting to shift toward something bigger:
- Feeling better
- Thinking clearly
- Staying healthy for the long run
- And living a life that includes things I’m excited about
Like walking on a sunny afternoon…
Dancing in a Zumba class…
Or getting ready for a trip to Paris.
And that feels like progress.
